How to Play: Playmat
Index -> Playing the Game -> Playmat

The large window at the top of the screen is called the playmat. Here you will see the islands placed in setup and the ships maneuvering between them. Also found in this area are the player boxes at the top and the chat window at the bottom middle.

At the bottom of your screen many kinds of information are displayed. At the lower left corner is an Illustration of the ship, crew, island, or terrain you have selected. You may click it to center the camera there.
At the upper left and right of your ships illustration are left and right arrows you can click to cycle through your fleet. You can also press the Tab key to do this.
Above this illlustration next to the game log is a small "crow's nest" icon. This is a toggle you can use to switch from the normal view of the playmat to an overhead view.
Moving to the right, the Deckplate displays statistics for a selected item, including point cost, nationality, name, number of masts (remaining/total), cargo capacity (used/total), base movement, and a row of dice illustrating cannon that are available to fire. When a mast is lost, its corresponding cannon die is grayed out in your deckplate. At the bottom of this box is the ability text for the selected item, including keywords.
The next box to the right is Actions, and this is where icons appear for the actions your ship or crew is able to use.
To the right of this is Cargo, spaces showing what crew and treasure your ship has aboard.
Above the Actions box are rulers you can use to measure ranges of L or S from the ship you have selected.
At the lower right corner of the screen is the Phase Dialog, where the game prompts you to take actions or pass as necessary throughout the course of your turn. An exclamation point icon will appear above this area in some situations where the game is waiting for you to respond.
